Gen Con Oz 2011 has been cancelled

You may have heard by now that Gen Con Oz 2011 has been cancelled. The announcement is on the twitters and the facebooks. The site still has the announcement that the 2010 convention was cancelled, so for the time being there’s nothing useful there. It looks as though it’s been cancelled for the same reasons as in 2010. That is, not enough corporate sponsorship.

Speculate away, if you like, about the reasons for it, but the problem now remains that there is no Gen Con Oz this year. What are your plans now? Will you try to attend something else, or more impressively, will you try to organise something else?

Hi Andrew, (I was about to answer your FB query, then I stumbled over this!)

We were dispaointed to see Gencon wasn’t able to get off the ground this year as it was a great opportunity for gamers of all genres to get together!

AUSCON in 2011 will be mainly aimed at Table Top, Board and Card Games, with seminars on painting, hobby and modelling, as well as retailers, display games and a family day in Sunday with activities for kids until 1pm.

Roleplay games are something we want to seriously look at a little later in the year. Andrew, feel free to contact me at AUSCON and maybe we can assist you in making a Role play event a reality again!

We want to grow AUSCON into a flagship event for all gamers, but it will take some time and it will be achieved with realistic goals and steps!

Thanks for stopping by, Mark. There are plenty of people who’d like to see story games included in conventions. I’ll get in touch with you about contributing to future Auscon events.
